We introduce learners to the three main techniques of investment appraisal, we go through each one, with step by step, concise, clear and engaging examples before students have a go at practising the calculations. We start with payback, a few examples with answers and then students can practice, we then look at the advantages before going on to ARR. A good set of examples and questions for ARR, with answers popping in to see how we get to the end figure. We then go on to look at NPV with a few more examples and questions. We start by looking at the PESTLE factors and what they include, we then look at Porter’s five forces before reading a case study on Morrison’s and the top four supermarkets in the UK. A 10 mark question with structure guidance and a concise model answer is included for students to look at and improve their own answers after peer assessments. To consolidate the PESTLE factors we read a concise fact file on the housing market, students use this information and their own research to find out more about the housing market, and then feedback the PESTLE factors they think are impacting on the housing market. We start by looking at the different types of stakeholders involved in a business, we then look at their key interests, followed by evaluating the most important interest for each stakeholders. Once students know the interests well, we can start to look at how stakeholders might conflict with each other - a few examples given here. We read a case study on Unilever, students prepare presentations on whether they should focus on shareholders or stakeholders, this is in the form of a 20 mark question so students could answer it after the presentation, or for homework. This double lesson introduces learners to the importance of cash for the survival of a business, inflows and outflows are discussed, students seperate inflows from outflows, then they go on to complete a cash flow forecast step by step with guidance on the powerpoint. Formulas are given to help work out net cash flow, opening and closing balance. Students then go on to consolidate this by creating a cash flow forecast for Ian Beale’s fish and chip shop, some further calculation practice followed. We also look at how to improve cash flows, there is a matching task which can be cut out and phsyically matched or written. 3, 6 and 9 mark questions with model answers to build exam skills on the topic. A consolidation lesson where students complete a cash flow forecast with a template on the computer. They can play with the figures to see how it will affect closing balance. We start by breaking down an example of a Pizza shop’s revenues, costs and profit to show how the income statement is built step by step, students consolidate with an activity of creating an income statement for Ian Beale’s fish and chip shop.
